To survive, animals and plants which have evolved to live in moderately silty soil are forced to find a new habitat. Agricultural soil is often swept away, and rivers and lakes in the vicinity can become clogged with silt. Silt will accumulate quickly when there are not enough trees, rocks, or other materials to prevent erosion. Silt build-up will ultimately lead to a reduction in the depth of water meaning that the areas with higher silt levels will be at higher risk of flooding, biological decomposition and blockages resulting in boats and other crafts being unable to pass. This can have significant consequences for the water’s future, and for the life that exists inside of it. Removal of silt is essential when the breakdown of dead plant leaves and other organic material together with run-off from nearby fields creates a build-up on a lake, pond or rivers bed.
